” You have been accepted for wilderness guide education program, as a full time student, starting at the 7th of January 2020″ Okay, so I applied for this wilderness guide education it begins early January in the coming year 2020 It lasts for about a year, and it qualifies me as a wilderness guide or nature guide it is the basic education in the field of outdoor guides in Finland it is commonly called just ´wilderness guide school´ I´m on a new life path here a while back I quit my longtime job and I´m looking for a new career completely for the first time I thought I might as well try to earn a living through through this outdoor stuff It´s not like there are jobs open for wilderness guides most of them are self-employed as far as I know, so you have to create your own line of work but a formal education will still make a difference in credibility, when creating your own business The education will be good for this hobby anyway, with the more professional approach to things, so I should get a lot more confident I do have quite a lot of camping and hiking experience, but I´ve just practiced things by myself I even call the outdoors my way of life these days I feel it´s become more than a hobby I spend a lot of time outside, and when I´m not out, I´m thinking about it it has become a part of who I am, a part of my identity I guess So even if I won´t end up doing the actual job, I´d still be happy with the new skills and information I´m sure the training will give me a deeper sense, even for all I already know But for now, I am trying to get employed in the outdoors, so the training won´t be just for fun I have a part of the education program here it begins with two days of orientation then five days of self-employment training one day of food hygiene license training I have the license already, and it´s valid for life I think I won´t need to renew it a day of security training, three days customer service training Three days of winter camping theory and gear maintenance that´s interesting Two days of snowshoeing and ice skating there must be a spelling mistake here… It doesn´t say if it´s an actual trip or a lecture Two days first aid training I have a recently renewed first aid license already maybe I won´t renew it just yet Three days skiing trip with skills training Yes please! So early February it´s action time finally Then sustainable development and environmental education Four days of fishing skills training, awesome 10 days skiing trip in the UKK wilderness in Feb-March One of my favourite locations, yes It´ll be very different to what I´m used to as a solo hiker, doing everything as I please and in my own pace In the school interview I was told that they divide the group on the wilderness hikes there could be as many as 30 students two students will act as leaders to the rest of the group one day at a time different people will act as leaders each day that´s how we´ll practice the actual guide work Then a job-learning period that´s in March too Next is boat driver training and exam then four days forging a knife and a flint striker Awesome Outdoor food service training knowledge of nature; mammals, insects, reptiles it´s always great to learn more about the natural world Two days first aid license 2 training I was told it is specifically designed for this education The training takes place outdoors, and it includes making improvised stretchers and such I used to have the first aid 2 license, but it was basically just like renewing the part one license Finnish nature: birds, ancient skills of survival, three days I like that Three days outdoor cooking – yes please! Another job-learning period… in May Four days paddling trip, theory and practice six days summer hike, in early June Five days natural food resources, herbs and traditional fungus tinder Very good Finnish nature: plants it´s tiresome to learn plants by myself, so it should be easier as a part of an education Six days survival trip! I wonder what goes on there I´m pretty sure it involves minimal gear hunting training and license, paddling instructor training, traditional crafts with bone and antler, Four days hiking theory and gear knowledge, well… Fungi and lichens, two days hike with skill training 10 days hiking trip in the Fall… adventure planning for large groups… Outdoor cooking again Forestry and natural forests… I like one of them, you might guess which one… Three days moose hunting weekend, in the fall Very interesting stuff indeed! a lot of new things for me, so I should keep my feet on the ground and not act silly like I know everything I´m going to keep an open mind and stay humble It´s going to affect this channel next year, as I´m studying for a new education It´s likely that I won´t have time for weeklong hikes of my own, but I should have plenty of time for shorter outings and I´ll be making videos of those but when it comes to longer hikes in the wilderness, they might be on hold for the next year or so As for some new content, I´m going to make vlogs about the school I´m thinking of a weekly, or biweekly vlog about what happens in the school and if it´s possible, I´ll film some stuff at school, b-roll type of footage maybe, but I don´t know how that´ll play out Anyways, my new education will benefit the channel in the future for sure I should be taking leaps ahead in skills and knowledge and it´ll create value for my videos, and new ideas and confidence for future trips for outdoor trips to come Who knows, I might even get to know someone who loves the outdoors as much as I do, and accompany me on some greater adventures, perhaps in other parts of the world too I´m kinda hoping for it actually, since I´d rather travel with someone than go alone, if a trip to a far destination would actualize I´d be thrilled to go to Australia for example or other places very exotic, as seen from here Time will tell how that plays out, or does it play out at all But yeah, I wanted to tell you about these coming things, and how it will affect this channel But for now, this is all and we´ll see in the next one Good bye!
